My work stems from traces of growth and transformation in the natural world and the built environment. I create masses and networks of lines, based on hand-drawn records of evidence of natural effects on everyday surroundings. My process includes making tracings and rubbings of surfaces like wood grain, peeling paint, cracking plaster, and corroding metal. I think of these marks as the calligraphic signatures of quotidian natural effects and as personal interpretations of the material evidence of time. My works evoke a variety of influences: plants, hair, muscles, and fungi; waves and wind currents; geological strata; topographical maps; and sound.
