Most of the time I hope to find meaning in the making of the work, which is why much of what I am doing is so process oriented. I try to create simply through repetition, addition, and subtraction. I often operate in the spirit of the Jasper Johns quote ,“Take an object / Do something to it / Do something else to it.” I do this until my mind feels clear. Sometimes the painting transcends that simplicity, and sometimes it collapses into nothing. I appreciate that the repetition begins to feel like physical labor. At other times, the process is a complete joy and time slips away. I hope that the paintings are experiential and unexpected. I like that they belong to a grand tradition of transcendental abstraction, but result from a humble process and modest life experience.
